For fans of AKFK perhaps or anyone who just likes games that give you the ability to build stuff, Minecraft is something you should check out.

http://www.minecraft.net

There's a free browser based version you can try, but it is only the building/destroying component of the game. There's no resource management, crafting, farming or combat in this one.

The game is done in first person view. Everything is composed of giant blocks of various materials. The world is randomly generated and then you are dumped in to do as you please.

I haven't purchased it yet, but I spent a couple hours in the free version last night. In that time, I built a really bad looking castle and a giant tower with a spiral staircase inside.

Yeah... I've been playing this game a lot the past couple of weeks. Very addicting game. I just love being able to build... probably why I loved Halo 3's forge.

Found myself a nice area to build my home. There was a small lava pool and it was near a large body of water. Built a main floor first. Basically holds my furnace and workbench. Also all my major supplies are in chests there. I also built a bunker overlooking the lava pit, so I can shoot an enemies in my front lawn. Lower level has an indoor pool, a room with windows on 3 sides ( two looking underwater and 1 looking in the lava pool ), and I'm starting my greenhouse in the basement with glass ceilings reaching my main floor. Already have wheat growing below ground. About to plant some trees as well. 2nd floor is an all glass lookout area so I can see what types of creepers and spiders are out there before I venture out. 4th floor is kinda like a castle tower with arrow dispensers. It allows me to shoot down on all my enemies at night.

I've also started building castle walls and towers in the distance to start walling off my little kingdom. Next step will to start terraforming my landscape so I can start placing trees and other items within my castle walls.

This game is such a blast.

It's dragged me in lately. I've been playing on a multiplayer server on another forum I frequent.

I built a giant glass globe (probably thousands of blocks). I think it had a diameter of 48 blocks. I've since started building up around it, but unlike my picture above, all of the mining for this is legitimate. I began working on an obsidian tower, but I've had to make and mine the obsidian from scratch. It took almost 4 hours just to get about 250 obsidian.

Here's a picture of it when it was almost finished. I had a few more layers to go and then we added 4 columns of lava running through it down into a lava moat below. I'll have to see if I can grab more pictures tonight.

Yeah, I've been using INVEdit to create my kingdom. I'm not keen on wasting my time mining for stuff to build. I just wanna build stuff. Have myself a nice cobblestone castle wall that is a complete square. The castle walls have bodies of water on two sides, and lava moats on the other two sides.

I've also restructured my main castle itself. Built myself a lava fireplace with hidden chest and have a painting covering a hidden door with small secret room with another chest. Main floor has a furnace and workbench with chests filled with ingredients. It's kinda like my kitchen/work area. I have a night club with glass covered lava floor and glass lava columns, and two record players as a DJ booth. There's also a walkway over my underground greenhouse leading to bunkers under my castle wall to take out any creepers along the back of my castle.

Basement has an indoor pool, glass walls facing lava pools and bodies of water, underground greenhouse, and underwater glass walkways leading to my castle wall.

2nd floor has master bedroom with a balcony and stairs leading to top of castle, a 2nd bedroom, and a patio.

My roof will eventually have a huge middle tower so I can see over my castle walls.

Currently in the process of building a river with a bridge over it... leading to my castle. Using loads of TNT to blow away the mountain and clear land for the river connecting two bodies of water. Some of the TNT ended up flying towards my castle wall and took out part of my bunker! :P

This game is so addicting and is such a creative outlet. It's got the one thing I miss about PC games... being able to mod and retexture all the blocks and items.

I was messing around with a roller coaster idea using INVEdit, but I kind of got sucked back into the multiplayer server.

Mining obsidian is getting tedious, so i've been messing around with other things. They turned monsters back on for the server, so I've had to be a bit more cautious and make sure my building is secure. I tried adding switch activated double doors using redstone, but it wasn't working correctly and I haven't had a chance to fix it yet.

Double doors are very difficult to get to work correctly, but you'll kick yourself when you get them working. Pay attention to the levels your redstone torch and circuits are at. The redstone torch must be used and be angled on the side facing the circuit.

Apparently, there's gonna be a similar game available on LIVE Arcade... called FortressCraft. Supposedly there's gonna be various stages of the game costing 80 MSP each.

Here is precisely where World of Keflings fell short...

The one on XBLA is terrible. I don't recommend it at all. There's no monsters, no crafting, no inventory. You just have a palette of blocks to choose from and can place as many as you like.

The pop-in is also bad on it and when blocks are placed or exposed for the first time, it loads with a generic texture and then switches after a second or two.

The only thing I really thought was a nice touch to it was the trampoline blocks. Other than that it is a poor attempt to steal some of Minecraft's thunder and make a buck off it.

That's actually just stage one... to get used to using the controls. Supposedly they're gonna add some of that other stuff in future stages. That way you can download the stages with the add-ons you want.

bronddy,

You should probably ask that on the minecraft forums, or send them an e-mail directly.
