Since 2006 when I lived in texas while I was in the military. I was on base, but my Internet provider put me on a usage. So if I went over that amount I paid a higher bill or a certain percentage to make up the difference. Even today some internet providers are charging more for how much streaming you do each month. This way you will have to pay more for internet. So for convenience we will be paying more to our internet companies even though digital media will cost about the same or a few dollars lower.

These of course are only my recent purchases (xbox 360 or later), hell, I have all my games going back to my first Wolfenstein floppy disk. I NEVER purchased anything nor hooked up my xbox's (original) to live so 100% was physical. Same for the PS2 obviously it was 100% physical as well. As for my 360's, they not modded and I do have them on live. Some games I do purchase through live but as you can see, the vast majority are physical. Most people I know (personally, real world) have very similar purchase habits. Mostly physical purchases with some DLC digital purchases with a few digital distro games.

Now, for demos, thats a different animal. I have downloaded demos of many of the above physical purchases. Digital demos are faster to obtain and delete, quicker to get into, and for the most part far more convenient since they do not suffer from the console lock license that DLC and digital games do.

As for PC applications, I would have to say I have a higher ratio of digital purchases than physical. Bryce, Poser, Modo, Paint Shop Pro, WinRar, etc. Mostly digital. In PC games, I have far more physical than digital.

You are welcome to derive any summations you wish from this data but I still maintain that I and many others will continue to prefer physical media for the security and convenience factors. I do agree, though, that digital purchases are likely to rise as more and more content is shifted to DLC addons. Physical will not go away for decades. I disagree that GameStop will go away any sooner than physical distribution and not because of digital delivery. They are going to be threatened by the big box stores like Walmart, Target, etc., that is their real threat, not digital distro.

I have enjoyed this debate immensely and am happy that it remains to be a civil conversation.

I read something a while ago that relates to this topic so i may as well post it.

THQ's possible future strategy for games
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/ar ... ?id=266171

I think its partly a good idea. Get a demo and then you buy the rest of the full game that you want. I think the system would work perfectly for some games like burnout paradise where you could buy the different districts to drive round, but not so well for any single player game. I know people complain alot in the comments about how it would cost more and i honestly think they just read the "upto $100" and posted a comment complaining. If you add it up though some people have spent that on games like Dragon Age or Fallout 3 without realising. The only downside would be it would be nearly all digital distribution and the cons would still exist.

Im hoping the next generation is all USB memory sticks with some strong DRM to stop piracy. I won't go into detail (ive planned everything) but i think it could be the best of both worlds, since you could save the dlc to the memory stick.
